Re: Left ignition switch on

I put my battery cutout switch under the battery tray on my 41.

You can't see it, and it has put me into a routine of a quick visual on the engine bay before and after taking her out.

Re: Rebuilt flathead tight - too tight?

I'll take the good advice on dedicated battery leads as well.

Much appreciated all. Many thanks.

Re: Rebuilt flathead tight - too tight?

Many thanks all. I suspect I may not have lubricated the rope seals enough....

Rebuilt flathead tight - too tight?

I'm in the final throes of rebuilding a 59A flathead. I'll be the first to say I'm an electrical guy, so I have been relying on manuals etc and advice from friends on this journey.

Nothing...

Re: 1941 Ford bumper end pieces

You'll need a longer bumper bolt as well. I have a set I'm not using, but the shipping from Australia will make your eyes water.....

Re: Break-in gone wrong!

Pardon me for what might be a dumb comment.

I'm putting a 59A together at the moment - my first engine and not yet ready to run. I fitted 'new' Mellings oil pump that was a different configuration...

Re: seat belts 40 coupe

Not wishing to hijack the thread, but does anyone have an idea on how to stop the belts falling behind the seat when it's folded forward?

Re: Dipstick Length

I'm not restoring the vehicle, it's a replacement engine for driver.

So, with the open pan on flat ground, 5 quarts of liquid should give me in the neighbourhood of the full mark?

Dipstick Length

I can recall reading that there are different flathead dipstick/tube combinations that could result in wrong oil level readings.

I'm currently putting a 59A flathead together. I don't know it's...

Re: How far should I go with my '41 flathead

I have a 41 SD convert and going down the path of building a 59 motor for it. The idea of a modest rebuild can become a rabbit hole real quick.

Check out the 1948 movie 'Mr Blandings builds his...

Re: 1941 Ford Convertible Motor/Lift Lower Mounting

On the 41 the mechanism can be a little 'grabby' if the two motor screw lift adjustment gets out of line. So by the time you have stopped to help it along and such, a manual top is a faster and...

Re: 1941 Ford Convertible Motor/Lift Lower Mounting

That single stiff wire seem to be some attempt at an earth wire by the previous owner.

The top was very slow to operate (take about 4 -5 min) so eventually I disconnected the actuators and I...

Re: 1941 Ford Convertible Rear Seat

There is a wood brace that runs across the width of the car. I recall hearing someplace that it is a structural member - not sure.

The rear seat is located and held in place by the brace. I can...

Re: Oil Pressure & Temp Gauge from Sweden

Whenever I see the twin Smiths unit I wonder why no one made a twin water heat unit for flatheads.

Re: Stock ammeter and 12V conversion - query

Thanks gents. Good idea, but I don't have the option of a shunt with the hall effect/inductive meter movement.

I will replace the stock ammeter. The reduced current of a 12V system might be a...

Re: Stock ammeter and 12V conversion - query

I reversed the wire in the ammeter when I did the conversion. When I checked the other day the headlamps came on fine brakes too, with only a small wiggle in the needle.

Thinking perhaps a...

Re: Stock ammeter and 12V conversion - query

I haven't had a chance to get my ammeter out yet. I use the guage as a general indication that the system is charging.

Now that the battery (Optima) is charged I pulled on the headlights. The...

Stock ammeter and 12V conversion - query

I recently had a charging system problem on my 41. Car is stock except for a 12V negative earth conversion.

The stock ammeter has the inductive loops on the back of the gauge that the main power...
