Re: How about a 4 banger T-Bird
I own a 55 Tbird; it's been in my family for 50 years. It's undergoing a restoration, but not 100% stock. I have about $2000 into the 57 big-valve ECZ-0G heads alone.
No matter what engine you put...

Re: Mercury 312
Tighter than what's specified in Ford manuals, but surely Tim knows what he's doing. He also said that he uses .020 lash for one of the aftermarket cams he uses, but he didn't say which.

Re: Mercury 312
.019 is hot lash. However, Tim McMaster (y-blockguy.com) likes to tighten lash to .015 "to quiet things down) on Y-blocks with stock cams. Cold lash should be .001-.002 more than hot lash; however,...

Re: Y Block Normal Vacuum w/mild Perf. Street Cam?
dw-satx, I realize this is an old post, but where did you come up with 266 duration for the Howard's 292002-10 cam? I have the same cam, and the advertised duration is 255; the duration at .050 is...

FPP SBF Windsor Stainless Steel Valves
I have a new set of FPP stainless steel valves I can't use. Unfortunately, I purchased them too long ago to be able to return them for a refund. They are new, unused, and in the original boxes. The...

Re: Strange 292 head problem
I was a senior in HS in 1973 and owned a 1969 SS396/w 375-horse L78 (same engine rated 425 in 65) and L88 427 cam. Needless to say, breaking the tires loose was easier done than said. I didn't keep...

Re: Teapot CFM?
Pinpoint accuracy, in any case, can be elusive. Even when putting it on a dyno, the engine will not necessarily perform as expected on the road. When you're happy with its performance, I guess you...

Re: Teapot CFM?
A couple of years ago, I read an article on testing several tachometers for accuracy. In a nutshell, some tachometers aren't very accurate.

Re: Strange 292 head problem
It's a good idea to involve the shop that did the heads before you do anything to them. They might fail to accept responsibility and blame it on you.

Re: Strange 292 head problem
On a completely stock engine? No. If you have a good quench area (.040-.045), you should get good results running on 87. As originally built, the pistons were about .020 below deck; with the original...

Re: Strange 292 head problem
Those heads have 73cc combustion chambers, used on 56 272 pickups, and have a static compression ratio of 8.5. They have the same valve sizes as the ECL heads.

Re: Strange 292 head problem
ECL-A heads were original equipment on 1955 272 Fords and 292 Mercurys. They have a lower static compression ratio (7.6) than the ECL-B/C heads (8.5) as found on 55 Tbirds and 4-barrel 292 Mercurys....

Re: Strange 292 head problem
I would use a sanding roll instead of a burr grinder, being careful to only remove the amount of material necessary. check your progress frequently.

Re: Strange 292 head problem
I don't know how thick the casting is in that area, so be careful. I suppose there could be casting flash/residue that's causing an obstruction. There might be just enough difference between the OEM...
