Re: Too much gear lube

I have been using 600W in gearbox and differential. I just switched both to 85-140 GL5 and so far have noticed no difference. Proof will come this winter, the car has always been very difficult to...

Re: Steering Gearbox Mounting Bolt direction.

Unless I misread, I don't think Brent was asking for a variance from a published standard, he was asking if there is a published standard. I suspect he'd be more than happy to install this steering...

Re: Steering Gearbox Mounting Bolt direction.

I would think it would be in Area 8, but I looked and didn't see anything. Not that I'm a Fine Points guy anyhow...

FWIW, when I took apart my unmolested '30 Town Sedan that's the way the steering...

Re: Watching YouTube videos pertaining to Model-A repair or restoration...

However, one should not put himself out as an instructor unless he is well versed in the material. There is a subtle but significant difference between “this is how it should be done” as opposed to...

Re: Model A serial number verification

Yes, I have a current title that came over from Wisconsin in 2017, and the frame number and engine number match the title. My concern is getting some knucklehead at DMV that insists on inspecting a...

Re: Valve lapping procedure

Craig - Place valve in its spot, then insert the two piece guide from underneath. Be sure to push both pieces completely up, they should hold without the springs and keepers. (Some folks pull up...

Re: Brake problem

This looks to me more like the transmission/torque tube is sagging, say from motor mounts not being where they are supposed to be. Look to be sure the front motor mount is installed correctly...

Re: Exhaust Fumes

I was getting an exhaust smell inside the passenger compartment of my '31. Turns out that sometime in the past someone had run over something (I don't remember doing it) and put a gash on the bottom...

Re: Too much gear lube

If you let the car cool down before checking levels, you will lessen the chance of burning yourself on the muffler.

Re: Watching YouTube videos pertaining to Model-A repair or restoration...

I'm not sure that is limited to Model As. Seems to me that a significant portion of what you read on the internet about pretty much anything is crap.

Re: I give up

I think you’re off a decimal point - up and down play should be 0.003”, not 0.03”. But I do agree, 0.018” is excessive. Not sure how you do that unless you omit the spacer at the bottom?

Whether...

Re: Front Hub Stuck to Brakes

Mike - you didn’t say whether there is a lip on the inner circumference of the drums. If there isn’t, then you could try gentle pull with a puller while tapping around the drum to get the shoes to...

Re: Ruidoso MAFCA meet

Years ago I was riding a motorcycle from Phoenix to Yuma in early June - not the best planning, I admit. I couldn’t leave Phoenix until 10am, and it was 110F. I stopped in Gila Bend for some fluids...

Re: Ruidoso MAFCA meet

I’ll be in one of the groups from San Jose (I’m in TK and SK’s group) noodling along at about 260 miles/day. Nk, I’d love to meet you and any other barners face to face. Synchro, should be able to...

Re: Tools/supplies needed while traveling

Come to think of it, one of our guys lost his tailpipe on a tour I was on. Lost the rear clamp bolt. We found another one among us and on we went.

Re: Tools/supplies needed while traveling

Things I’ve either had, or traveling companions have had, fail on the road that I’ve not seen mentioned:

—Timing gear (and gaskets to replace it)
—Radiator hoses and clamps
—Radiator cap gasket...

Re: Model A serial number verification

California has a process where individuals can be licensed to verify VIN. My 30 Town Sedan body is off the frame right now, I intend to get one of these guys in to verify the frame vs engine vs...

Re: Tight Fit for Inner Wheel Bearing

Yes, it appears that spindle shaft has been peened (not “preened”), that’s what the dots are. As mentioned, likely because a bearing has spun in the past. Hand peening like that can lead to the...

Re: White walls

I think this is another one of those topics like “what’s the best oil” and “antifreeze or not” that we’ll never resolve.

FWIW, I have whitewalls on the four corners and two fender-mounted spare...

Re: Washer for Rear Backing Plate

While you are at it, suggest you get a new set of the special nuts to be sure all of your hardware is correct. BTW, last set of the new bolts I ordered were just a hair too large to go through the...
