Removinf Rad Shell Emblem I unfastened the steel inserts on a 31 radiator shell for bead blasting and painting. They are very pitted. How can I remove and reinstall the FORD emblem on the top insert so I can bead blast, fill the pits and paint it without damaging the emblem? It looks like it can be driven out but the insert is so rusty I don't want to use too much force. Thanks, John

Here is one I have, looks like there was a dab of solder applied on top to hold it in place. Try some heat and press it out using a socket with the right diameter. Bob

Spray some penetrant on the clasp. I made a special tool that only presses on the very outer edge of the clasp. I made 38 of these tools and sold them. Maybe someone in your area has one you can use. If not, then you can make one from a piece of pipe. Cut a taper on the end so the outer edge is what hits the clasp. I made mine from solid brass that was chrome plated. |
Re: Removinf Rad Shell Emblem I was wondering why the painted area gets rusty/pitted while the exposed unpainted edge is not. I assume the whole insert is made of stainless like the grill surround? Is it the paint that etches the stainless surface promoting eventual rust?

Re: Removinf Rad Shell Emblem I used a block of 2x2 whittled round and a hammer to remove mine.

Re: Removinf Rad Shell Emblem I can attest to Tom Wesenberg's very neat tool. The tool is ingenious. He removed emblems from two of my shells in about 2 minutes with no damage to the emblem or shell. It only touches the very outside edge of the emblem mounting.

Re: Removinf Rad Shell Emblem I use a deep socket that fits at the outer edge od the disc and give it a rap with a hammer.

Re: Removinf Rad Shell Emblem TudooR31, the painted inserts are mild steel and succeptable to rusting. They are tabbed into the outer shell which is stainless (allegheny metal ),
I taped over the trim with Gorilla tape and bead blasted them. Worked fine. I will go back and try to remove the solder and turn a removal tool. Thanks for the help. |
