Winter Storage
 

I've got a '40 sedan with Coker Tires. Someone told me when storing for Winter to put carpeting under each wheel. Any comments or recommendations on this?

Shag works well, but it's getting harder to find.

I have my trucks and a Model fordor sedan in our Fire Co.'s Pole barn. I have two of the vehicles on carpet. I have them on carpet as a barrier to moisture, not to protect the tires. I have had a set of Firestone's on two of my truck for ten years, on and off carpet, they are like new still. I have heard of letting a little air out of the tires, but I don't think that would be good for the side wallls.

I don't think carpet will do anything except protect the floor. Put it up on jack stands to protect the side walls. The main problem is the ethenol fuel. It attracts water and causes problems with the sending unit and corrousion to the tank. There is an additive you should put in, I don't know the name. Not Stabil but something like Stratus?? G.M.

Hey Mike51....you're a funny guy !! I just happen to have some '60's Avocado Green Shag that would be perfect. I'll have to take it up off the floor though !!

GM....we have recreational fuel in Michigan and I use it all the time. You pay 20¢ more per gallon but it works great.

Here's how much I don't think it matters. Before restoring "Old Henry" he sat outside with flat tires sunk into the ground for 31 years. When we were ready to move him we just pumped up the tires and drug him away. The tires were still round, the sidewalls were OK and we drove the car on those tires for the year we were restoring it without a problem. Only one of the 4 old tires eventually went flat and had to have a leak fixed but the others were fine from the day we pumped them up. No carpet.:p

Yeah you got 31 years out of those tires but I'll bet they won't last 31 more! The carpet trick might have saved you the cost of a tire! :)

I think the carpet might be good to wipe you shoes, before you get into the car, but that's about it.;)

Carpet holds moisture. If I had to store mine in an unheated garage I would lay down plastic as a moisture barrier.

Carpet is for the mice to eat, so they get full before getting into your interior....

I always put mine up on jack stands to take the weight off the tires.

Carpet - shag or otherwise - under tires? I've never heard that one either.

But to be safe, I guess I'd better bring the car into the living room, and move the beanbags & love beads to the garage to make room for Vicky. . .:D
