Hand crank wiper

On a '28 roadster pickup, does the hand crank wiper just go through a hole in the windshield frame with no bushings or brackets?
Thanks again

Re: Hand crank wiper

The 28 and 29 windshield frames had a small tube, maybe 1 1/4" long or so that the hand wiper went through. I don't think there was any bushings or anything else that were used. I could be wrong of course. Windshield on Model A's with hand wipers used the small tube, model A's with vacuum and electric wipers just had a series of holes in the top of the windshield frame.

My mistake, I misread your post as a CCPU wiper question. Never mind.

I'm thinking the pickups had a steel tube for the wiper, but my 28 Phaeton just runs through two holes in the windshield frame and with no bushings.

Re: Hand crank wiper

Open cars had no bushing...the W/S frame was the bearing surface.

On CCPU, there is a rolled sheet metal piece that is spotwelded to the W/S
frame for a bearing surface.

The open wiper is different than the closed cab.

* believe Mr. Moordigian to be correct re: no tube on Open PU.

Charles,

I always thought there should be some kind of washer on the front side of
the wiper arm(as it goes through the W/S frame) in your second photo. But have
never seen anything in that area.

Do you think that is correct? Marco?

Re: Hand crank wiper

there is a small 'upset' near the curve of the shaft that i believe is intended to keep the washer in place. this is the configuration i found on the vehicle (not to say someone had not modified somewhere in the past)

Drilling a hole on the curve of the winshield frame might be a challenge. I thought my frame was original bit it doesn't have that hole.

Turned out to be a five minute job and looks and works great.
