Can I remove the Rear Axle without removal of remaining drive shaft?

I've order the Pinion nut Wrenches, and they are on thier way. But was wondering if I can still work on this and remove the rear axle from the Banjo without remoing Pinion/leftover shaft in banjo? Or do I move onto something else and wait for the Pinion wrenches to come in to finish dissambling? Just a question since I like to focus on working one item at a time and plus I'm impatient (LOL).

Yes, See the post with Tom Endy's homemade tool to remove the pinion with bearings.

See "Homemeade A Tools"

Remove the ten banjo bolts on each side and pull the two axle housings off and stand them on newspaper to drain out. The entire axle assembly with both axles and the ring gear is then exposed and you can lift it away from the left side of the pinion gear and set it on a work bench.

You should be able to improvise something to turn the large nuts on the drive shaft. It looks like someone cut part of the drive shaft off. I suspect you are going to do a complete rebuild. No need to worry about preserving the pre-load on the pinion bearings. You will need the large wrenches you ordered for when you do the re-assembly.

Thanks Tom E- I like your photos that Tom W- referenced above about your HomeMade pinion puller!

This is an Extra rear I'm working on and it's a total re-build so when I do the full restore- I have it ready to swap out- The drive shaft was cut since it was bent (BIG TIME)
As far as I can tell now that I haven't opened her up, it has one bad axle - Someone Stripped the threads to hold the hub on so they peened then welded the nut on the axle.

Both side brakes/parking brakes-plates were in great shape so I'll be re-doing these too

I suspect you do not have the discertation. Go to www.ocmafc.com. On the menu at left scroll to "tech articles" and click. It will bring up a new menu. At the top is my name, click on it. It will bring up a list of tech articles. Scroll to the one about rebuilding the differential. You can download the article and print it out. It will assist you with the rebuild.

Once you remove the driver's side (left) axel housing, the ring gear and carrier assembly can be slid out of the banjo.

Check to see if the carrier housing, spider yoke and gears have been marked for assembly. Usually - you will see punch marks on the parts. If don't see any do it yourself before disassembly. It is a matter of keeping the same wear patterns in place. Have fun, Bill
