Re: laycock volvo overdrive oil when i pulled it from the wrecking yard, it was filled with ATF. so volvo specifies type F. also, i see the is a small bolt (plug) on the side. ill fill it till it runs out of there. fill it from the larger plug someone put on the top. any reason i shouldnt use the ATF?

Re: laycock volvo overdrive oil I have the "J" type in My Lancia Lambda (out of a Volvo)
In many cars with this overdrive installed, it shared the gearbox oil. So this should indicate what type of oil they were originally intended to work with. Also, if the overdrive is remote from the gearbox as in Most Model A installations, there should be some thought given to fitting a reservoir as the amount of oil contained solely by the overdrive is limited. The gentleman who recently overhauled the overdrive suggested a 80-90 grade oil with a non slip additive? |

Re: laycock volvo overdrive oil I got my Laycock OD about ten years ago. The builder told me to put a quart of 30 wt oil in it. It's worked for me all these years.

Re: laycock volvo overdrive oil The Volvos used 80-90 except when they had an overdrive.
In the overdrive equipped cars the transmission bearings were different and the trans and overdrive used ATF. Since there is a clutch in the overdrive that engages when the unit is under power it would be bst to use ATF as it will not cause the clutch to slip for a while like it may do with motor oil or heavy gear oil although with the limited power the model A engines out out it obciously doesn't hurt too much to use whatever kind of oil you want. I'd still use ATF. |
Re: laycock volvo overdrive oil thanks guys!

Re: laycock volvo overdrive oil I've had mine for 8 plus years, now on it's second Model A. Started with AFT and later the builder recommend 30wt motor oil. If your pump begins to wear, and doesn't shift into second over very well, then try 50wt.
I live in CA where we have hot summers. So 30 wt might be you best choice. The overdrive will hold 1 quart of oil. |
