Man is it hard to find a flathead guy in Ok.

Ok so I have since picking up my first flathead been looking for a machine shop that will work with me on building a flathead without results...... I have a job which I am out and about all day and I take my down time to visit with local machine shops to see if they can help me in my flathead block.... well most I get the No we can’t help you because of the special tooling needed to do "THOSE" engines????:(And I did find a guy that is a good engine builder but has never worked on a flathead willing to do it..... So what do I do? Do I let the guy TRY out flathead building with my help blind leading the blind so to speak but he has allot of experience in building engines.......I have been collecting flathead tools so that I have everything I need to do the job myself except machining and that seems to be the hold up
Thanks to russ/40 for helping me out on the valves and out of 3 complete engines I think I have one that I can get running by myself with just a hone and new rings and valve lapping
But if all doesn’t go well on this engine Im screwed in the machine shop part of the build…

If you are a V-8 Club member why not check with the members listed in the roster in your area. I'm sure someone will have a recommendation. If you are not a club member it's a good reason to join. The V-8 Times magazine and roster is worth the price of admission.

Give Howard Tribbey a call at 918-865-7455 and check out his web site at www.howardscustomflatheads.com. He uses a shop in Tulsa to clean up and mag the block plus any machining and he does the assembly. He also has complete engines for sale.

Did you ever look for the guy in Grove that specializes in flatheads? I don't remember the name, but I am sure if you call the NAPA store there they can tell you.

Give me a call If I cant help you, I can direct you to someone here in Okla.
as we all know a lot of the older machine shops are fading away, however
I still send out a little flathead machine work, also you might check around for some industrial engine shop as a lot of the older industrial engines and compressors were somewhat heavier and also were flatheads of many difrent brands.

I don't get it. Unless your having new babbit bearings pur in, any machine shop can bored or grind valves.

I thought the same thing and I have heard every excuse in the book of why they "cant" do the job

Like any project, take one step at a time. First you need to get the block hot tanked and cleaned. Then magnafluxed and pressure tested to be reasonably sure you have a good block. Then you can take your measurements and plan the next steps. John

You're probably right on the boring. Valves are a different matter altogether. All valve grinders/cutters I know of center off the guide and with the valve out, the factory guide isn't stable enough for accurate seat work. A special pilot is used for seat work and most machine shops don't and won't have it for the few times they might ever have a need for it.

The best way to find resources for anything pertaining to the Flathead Ford hobby is to either join a local Early Ford V8 club or contact one of the members. Most of them have been their and done that.
