Universal Joint Install Question.

2 Attachment(s)
I posted this question in another thread and only got 1 response so I moved it here to see if there are other views. I am installing my engine in my 29 Tudor and I was just finishing my Universal Joint cover instal and I have a question about the proper way to install the bolts. Les Andrew’s book shows the bolts in the flange being installed towards the rear, however there is not enough room to install the bottom bolt that way so I have it facing front. My car is not a Fine Point car but I am curious if the way I have them in the pictures is correct or should they all face the same direction (towards front). I am leaning towards having all of them the same way but I wanted to see what others have done. This is not a big issue but if there’s a “right way” I would prefer to go that way. Pictures attached

Re: Universal Joint Install Question.

Refer to the Ford Service Bulletin of June, 1929, Page 350, Figure 712. The top center bolt has the castle nut on the backside of the housing. The remaining bolts have their castle nuts on the front side of the housings. The horizontal 2 bolts have their castle nuts on top of the housing.

Thanks for the information, big help. I will pull the service bulletin out and take a look.

There is also a note in Bratton's catalog, Page 46 in the listing of the Universal Bolt Set. Bratton's catalog has a plethora of tips about the authenticity of Model A parts & how parts should be assembled. Thus I consider Bratton's catalog a must have in my tech library. On the other hand, Synder's on-line catalog has excellent pictures of Model A parts, so I keep a bookmark handy to their catalog.

The horizontal 2 bolts have their castle nuts on top of the housing.

Do you mean the two VERTICAL bolts on the sides of the housings? I believe they were simply hex head bolts with nuts and lock washers, nuts on the bottom side. If not these, which horizontal bolts are you referring to that would take castle nuts?
