The seller reports that the Ford will overheat if driven when the temperature is above 70. The engine bay presents as generally clean, with what appears to be chromed aftermarket water pipes.

Oh lord.... So it can only be driven if you live in Alaska?

AACA judges on the quality of the restoration, NOT the correctness.
I'd never placed much "stock" in a AACA awarded car as they can be nice in appearance but so very incorrect in so many ways.
I am far from being a '34 expert but can spot many incorrect things on that '34 roadster without much effort. So, if I can spot "many", just how many will a true '34 expert (Dave, ya out there?) spot?

That 32 surely has a few 'hacks' on it and things that are not original. BUT, if it is an actual Ford body and doesn't have any rust issues or crappy body work, it wasn't a bad price for $42K.

It probably needs a new engine and some other mods, but it would make a good hotrod start. Try to get to this level starting out with a Brookville body . . . you'll be far over $40K (depending on who is doing the work).

Agreed, but all that you mentioned must be be inspected and confirmed. These on-line auctions can hamper a proper inspection.

Using all the other "issues" as a gauge, I'd assume there are some sins. lurking underneath.

I can't see much of the '34 given all of the ads, but about all the stands out in the few photos I could view are the wheel trim rings (not Ford) and the finish on the grille bars.



The '32 roadster? Now that's an entirely different story.

Of course, the single side WSW and I wonder about the color of the top, it could be faded T-14 or maybe not. I could not find a photo with the gas tank showing, only six photos in total. Tough to sell anything for 100K with only that much showing.

I could be going blind, but my opthalmologist would claim that isn't so. If you look closely at the interior photos of the '32 it appears that the wood back belt does not tuck down into raised pockets in the upper quarter panels, but rather sits on top of the upper quarter panels, a sure sign it is not an original body but one made much more recently in Ohio. The other tell tale sign is that we can see far too much of the binding head screws attaching the dash to the cowl, which is another Brookville giveaway.



Forty K seems a bit high for a repro body and a tired 59A engine.

David, I'd never even think to pretend I knew a thousandth of what you do in regard to '34 Fords.
The gas tank appears to be a Drake with Drake's silver powder finish. Wrong drain plug / wrong finish on the plug.

When I read an ad that states clearly the car was "restored to factory correct specs in concourse quality" and it takes me but a minute to find a number of inconsistencies, well, that leads me to believe the seller either doesn't know any better (oh oh!) or the seller is BS'n a bit too much (a bigger OH OH!).
The top is stated to be tan. Um, "restored to factory correct specs..."?

It was also stated that the year of restoration was unknown (no documents?) and having been driven little, the car remains in concourse condition.
The supposed few miles it was driven were apparently laid down in the desert judging by the dust / dirt on the undercarriage.
Perhaps the concourse referenced is the local McDonalds, Wednesday evening?

You're sure right about the gas tank. Still, far too few photos for a $100 K car. What about the floor? The wood graining is suspicious and that's poor workmanship to have that stitching showing above the dash. It's easy to avoid.

Two more glitches on the '34: spare tire bracket should be black and seat sight shields should be color of upholstery, not body color.


It looks to be a very nice car, just not a $100 K example, IMO.

We were told by a group of AACA judges in SE Regional show in Gainesville FL "there is nothing correct on this car" about our German 32!!! AND It won a National First Place in 1967 in Fort Lauderdale FL WAY more incorrect than it is now, Ie 34 engine and all the accompanying ad ons, etc etc !!!!
