‘46/7 cab swap to a ‘40/1?
 

Hi guys. Hoping to get some good feedback here as I do not know the floor differences. Building a ‘41 half ton for my first customer. The ‘41 cab needs a lot of metal repair. I found a ‘46/7 that needs nearly no repair. I understand the hole for the gas tank neck and the tank being under the seat but what else is different? Holes for front fenders I think need to be added. Will the floor allow it to bolt up to a ‘40/1 pickup frame?

As I recall the '41 truck cab is very similar to the '42-47.. You might have to adjust the frame mounts and front fender attachments, Use the '41 dash. I doubt if the average person would ever know.

I tend to agree with blucar. IIRC, there is even a stamped boss in the jailbar cowl that is not drilled and it corresponds to a bolt required for the 40-41. I have two cabs sitting on pallets that I could measure something from if you'd like.

I got to thinking about my earlier comment about the '41 truck cab being quite similar to the '42-47.
I got out my truck book this morning to look up the '41 trucks... I knew that Ford retained the '40 sedan delivery on the '41 SD with just a few minor changes. I owned a '41 sedan delivery from 1954-55, the '41 SD had a 40 standard grille/front end.
In the early '60's a neighbor of mine had a '41 pickup that had the 40 standard front end with the '40 standard grille and a six cylinder engine.
The '40-41 trucks had a 112 inch wheel base where-as the '42-47 have 114 " WB. The cab would not have anything to do with the WB, so the '46-47 cab might fit on the '41.

The floor dimensions are the same, the dash panel is the same press and the cowl area is the same press. You’ll need to add the upper and lower fender mounting holes(lower requires a cage nut) to the cowl sides. It seems there might be an extra bracket on the ‘42-‘47 for mounting to the frame. Also the upper roof seam above the “B” pillar area is visible, on the ‘40/‘41 this was a factory leaded joint so not visible.

I have a friend who did this. '47 cab on a '40. He said it was hard to get the hood and fenders to line up. Turned out nice but he said it was a lot of tedious work.

It is very important to get the cab to frame wood blocks shimmed just the right height, it doesn't matter if the correct 40/41 cab or the later 42/47.

Thanks for the responses. So the wood for the ‘40 and ‘41 cabs fit the ‘46 and ‘47? Are the mounting holes the same or do those need to be located?

The door windows in the 42-47 pickup have the steel frame around the windows and the 40-41 pickup do not have the frames.
