Seperating 1936 flathead engine and transmission Hi,
I'm going to remove a 1936 flathead engine from the car and seperate from the transmission. Is there anything special to do or be careful about concerning the throw out, clutch, or clutch basket ? Removing the engine for rebuild. I've done this in late model cars a few times but never an early V8 so just checking before I create a mini disaster, thanks. |
Re: Seperating 1936 flathead engine and transmission I took mine out engine and trans at the same time. I removed the grill and used an engine hoist with one of those engine tilt things so I could almost stand the engine and trans straight. I rented a 1 1/2 ton hoist. I should have rented the 2 1/2 ton hoist. the 1 1/2 did not have enough length to easily reach the engine. Oh, and I removed the manifold and made a plate to bolt to the engine, then to attach the hoist to. I probably could have just bolted it to the block, but did not want to scratch or dent anything.

Re: Seperating 1936 flathead engine and transmission Separation of the engine and transmission is purely conventional. Nothing out of the ordinary.
Removal of the engine from the vehicle is subject to a lot more consideration, but I am not sure if you are asking about that. Engine steady rods for example will need to be detached. |
Re: Seperating 1936 flathead engine and transmission There are two dowel pins in the engine block to help align the gearbox to the engine block. They can be a snug fit and you will have to carefully pry the two (engine and transmission) apart about a half inch. Depending on how long the engine and transmission have lived together, and how much of a damp environment they’ve endured, the input shaft of the trans could be stuck to the clutch disc…..which can resist separation.

I can do either way, the body is off the frame. I have a later model flattie that I want to hook up and run for a little bit while the 36 flathead is getting refurbished.
