MAPP gas torches

I just found this on an other site & thought we all should be aware of the possible dangers with these torches. I just bought a second one & find it extremely useful but it obviously deserves to be treated carefully.

Check the following link - (Caution there are some pictures you may not want to see!)

This seems a legitimate problem & not the work of some nut exposing an obscure possibility.

Wow, that is scary. I use the torch tip with the flexible hose but that kit came with a belt clip which holds the tank to your belt. I would hate to see what would happen if the tank neck broke while on my belt.

Re: MAPP gas torches

Is it just the mapp gas or all of the torch/propane cylinders?

Re: MAPP gas torches

I would assume the dangers relate to both types. Never heard about this before. It's a wake-up call for sure.

Re: MAPP gas torches

All the litigations were filed between the years 2004 and 2008. We know of no litigation involving propane gas. All breached cylinders known to date contained MAPP gas. As of April 30, 2008 "MAPP" was no longer produced, and Worthington replaced it with "MAP" gas under the Worthington label. It appears the cylinders continue to be designed with deficient joints, though whether or not the added problem of corrosion will exist with the new gas is not known at this time. Worthington disclosed it sold about 21 million units over a two or three year period, apparently between the years 2005 and 2008. Many of the "MAPP" cylinders remain on the market as of the date of this publication.
