How Do You Tighten 8BA Crank Pulley Bolt

I want to check the torque of the bolt that secures the crank pulley to the crankshaft. The engine is in my 40 Ford.

What is the best method used to prevent the crank from rotating when I tighten the bolt? Bolt tightens by turning it clockwise when standing in front of the car? The torque is 45-55 foot pounds.

Would it be ok to put the transmission "in gear" with emergency brake "on"?
Thanks, JIM

Hey Jim.....You've been piddlin' with these old used cars long enough now that you knew that was a good answer. I'd choose 3rd GEAR rather than 1st or 2nd! This affords LESS mechanical advantage for turning the transmission INPUT shaft.

I set the impact on low and call it a day. Been doing that for over 40yrs, no worries yet...;)

I did it the correct way and used a torque wrench.

Besides, you can't use an impact wrench when the engine, radiator, fan and fan pulley set up are in the car. Not enough room.

If possible, let us know how much torque is applied when the setting on your impact wrench is set at "LOW".

Cheater bar and a BFH is all you need.

I am truly surprised by the "amateur" approach some have suggested.

Kind of like saying" Cross threading a bolt is ok as long as it holds."

I'm not at all surprised.

Jim....Have you never heard this end-all phrase that I grew-up with?

"A good cross-thread is far superior to a self-locking nut!"

Ask a stupid question, get a stupid answer. My Momma taught me that.
