Canadian guys lower their ‘41 Merc rear |
Re: Canadian guys lower their ‘41 Merc rear the more drop you add the more the car sways left to right looks good but spoils the ride

Re: Canadian guys lower their ‘41 Merc rear Funny how since before the 60's up and including now how much money has been spent lowering the front.................

Re: Canadian guys lower their ‘41 Merc rear Without some kind of rear track rod it'll handle like a Labrador on linoleum. My 41 did. Not that I was doing any fancy driving, but a gusty crosswind could get very sporty.
Too much sideways movement from long shackles and you will scrub into the sidewall on the rear tyres when cornering. Don't ask. Eventually I reversed the eyes and de-arched the springs. Guess I just had to learn he hard way. Nice spring spreader BTW. |
Re: Canadian guys lower their ‘41 Merc rear My new to me 37 coupe came with the super long shackles on the front causing the axle to be right down on the bump stops. Not good.
I ended up building a spring spreader to remove them. I cut off two inches and made new (square) holes. Would have been worth it to buy new but I didn’t know the holes were square before I started. Typical for me - a half day project turns in to a two day project. |
Re: Canadian guys lower their ‘41 Merc rear I was kind of afraid this was done the way a '40 Ford I had years ago was done. With a torch. The spring had almost a 90 degree bend on each end. I don't think it would have had a very good ride, but I never ran it that way. I replaced the torched spring with one fresh from the junkyard. Yep, used long shackles (mainly because you didn't need a spring spreader to install it.)
