1935 NORS brake drums I have several 48, (1935) replacement brake drums, Couple questions;
Are they one year only, 1935 ? Are the front & rear drums different or the same ? Is the difference between the 48, and O1A drums, the 48 fit inside the backing plate, and on the O1A's, the backing plate fits in the drum slot ? Are those drums still available, as I can't find them listed in Joe's catalog ? Thank you. |

Re: 1935 NORS brake drums From my experience '35 front and rear drums are totally different from each other and from any other Ford drum.
The rear hub, if removed from the drum may look like '40-'41; but is different. |
Re: 1935 NORS brake drums I thought it was 36 that was different??

Re: 1935 NORS brake drums '35, '36, and '37-'38 drums are all unique with the latter two having the wide bolt pattern and of course the fronts and rears are unique for each with very different bearing arrangements. What readily distinguishes a '35 drum from the '32-'34 drums are its raised ribs on the outside horizontal surface (when mounted) as shown in DD's photos which the earlier drums lack.

Re: 1935 NORS brake drums Is the difference between the '33-'34 drum and '35 just the ribs on the perimeter of the drum ? Any other differences ? Thank you.
|
Re: 1935 NORS brake drums I believe the 35 drums are wider than a 32-34 drum. They can accommodate a 1-3/4" wide shoe vs 1-1/2".

Re: 1935 NORS brake drums from what I have seen, 35's have the 3 ribs around the drum like coopman's picture, and 32-34 have one rib
|
Re: 1935 NORS brake drums So it sounds like the only functional difference is a wider swept brake area on the '35 vs the '32-34.

Re: 1935 NORS brake drums No ribs on '32-'34 drums unless you count the outer perimeter as a rib, which it sort of isn't in the sense of the ribs on a '35 drum, but rather serves as a slinger to minimize the intrusion of rain water into the brake drum while underway. If you count that as a rib, then the '35 drum has four ribs, not three.

Re: 1935 NORS brake drums 1 Attachment(s)
I had this axle kicking around, waiting to be taken, for a couple years. Just noticed there is something not quite right about it.
https://www.fordbarn.com/forum/album...ictureid=44093 Guess I need to move it to the front of the line to see what is going on. |
Re: 1935 NORS brake drums 35 drum on a 32-34 axle ?
|
Re: 1935 NORS brake drums It appears to be a '32 front axle and not either the '33 or the most common, the '34 version. (All of which are functionally equal.)
|
Re: 1935 NORS brake drums Is it a "heavy" (32) axle I can't really see. What says it is not a 35 axle?
|

It's not a '32 axle; it's the later "skinny" axle used up until '36. I just thought it funny after walking by it all the time I never noticed that it had later drums on it. I mean multiple times a week for several years. |
Re: 1935 NORS brake drums Oh of course, yeah, the 35 spindles are cross steer.
