Gas tank shutoff valve

I am going to replace the gas shutoff valve on my 31 s/w town sedan with indented firewall. What is the recommended sealant to use on the threads where it screws into the outlet of the gas tank?

I would use gasoila. You can get it at tractor supply.

I use Permatex 59214 Thread Sealant. No reason for the "High Temperature", it was what was available at my local auto parts store. It has worked well, I had one shutoff valve that was leaking and it sealed it up fine. I keep the tank dry for at least 24 hours after screwing in the valve to let the sealant have a chance to set. I have not had luck with so-called "teflon tape" in gasoline applications, the gasoline seems to dissolve the tape.

I don't know about "the" stuff, but yes, it does have teflon (PTFE) in it. Here's a link to the product data sheet. I'm not saying it's the "best", I'm saying it's what I've used, it's readily available and works well for me.

I suspect that some flavor of Locktite would also work, but Locktite is a different product - polymethyl methacrylate compound, aka Super Glue. Not typically used on tapered fittings like the gas valve.

I use Permatex! Never had a problem. However had problems with new petcocks not being of quality and them leaking! Sad situation on some parts and in this case a safety issue.
