Generator Field Coil Insulation

I’m rebuilding a stock A generator and am replacing the coils because the cloth (?) insulation has deteriorated and is falling off. The coils themselves seem fine - continuity tests indicate no broken windings.

if I decided to simply re-insulate the original coils, what should I use ? They appear to have been originally wrapped with some sort of cloth friction tape.

Thanks - Jim

Re: Generator Field Coil Insulation

There are a few different paper tapes that are used in the rebuilder's stock. I have used the 1/2 inch and 3/4 size with success. If you are sure each coil is not shorted and has continuity, great. Wrap the coils and secure the ends, after which coat or spray with an insulating coating such as McMaster Carr carries. I use an expanding tool inside the coils pressing them firmly against the generator interior, and then securing the field pole screws tightly with an impactor screw bit.
