39 Ford Rear hub fitment

The rear hub nut, etc for securing the drum at 200ft lb also comes with a fibre washer the sits in the spigot before fitting washer and nut.
Is it really necessary to use this fibre washer? What does it actually do?
Thanks

It's a seal; any oil migrating down the keyway for example, can go no further.

There's no real torque on that fiber grease seal. It sits tucked into a pocket that allows it to be compressed just enough to provide the seal.

You can cut one as simple from stock stuff also. Felt is not hard to find. Agreed it's not that hard line. thin felt. Wouldn't worry about it. These cars need attention. You'll be checking it every spring anyway.

The fiber washer/gasket made by Best and supplied in their banjo rear gasket set, does an excellent job of sealing that area of the rear hub, behind the washer, when axel nut is torqued in place. However, it seems to be a one time deal. Once you remove that drum again, it's best to use a new fiber washer if/when putting that drum back on. They are inexpensive, and can be purchased separately.

You can make one from an old leather belt.
