Sanity check 39 rear brakes

1 Attachment(s)
Hi guys

In the 5-6 years since the purchase of my 39 coupe, I’ve put about 12k miles on it. I’m thinking I would like to adjust the rear brakes (front are disc).

Am I correct, this adjustment is all done with the upper bolt shown in pic?

Also am I correct that (with emergency brake off) I would tighten one side till I can’t turn wheel then back off till I can turn - then repeat procedure on the other shoe (same wheel)?

Hi guys

Ok adjusted brakes with assist from video. Went well...

Follow up question. While up on lift and examining lower brake pins I noticed that the front shoe driver side pin/dot (see attached) was facing in. In reading directions, this position for starting adjustment process. Is this an indication shoe is not centered properly?

It might mean that shoe is very thick and is fully adjusted at that point. Or, it could be wrong, but if it stops nicely I'd leave it as-is. Check them again in a year.

Brakes should not be adjusted with the shoe mounting bolts. Use the eccentric adjusters lower on the backing plate, the ones with the 11/16 heads. As you have a combination of disc and shoe brakes, I assume you have a proportioning valve between the front and rear brakes, and hopefully a dual master cylinder for safety.
