12 volt head lights

i was afraid of installing halogen headlights in my 42 truck. will they draw to much current. i was looking for regular 12 volt headlamps ,but can,t seem to find any ! i don,t care for newer looking led ones, what do you guys use.

Re: 12 volt head lights

Are you dealing with "sealed beam" or old style bulbs? Chap

Re: 12 volt head lights

I have halogen in the model A with the stock 6 volt generator, 35 watt, no problems with keeping battery charged,
How many amps will your modified system make ---has the output been tested on the vehicle?

With the stock 6V system on a 42 I would be using 50 -60 watt halogens, it has over twice the charging capabilitys of the model A, stock should be 32 amps, though there are higher output generators as options

Re: 12 volt head lights

i was told by a Buddy who installed 2 halogen seal beams on his 56 Chevrolet. that his lights would shut down by them self, like if they were over loading his wiring. he removed them and put back the old ones, everything went back to normal. i got new wiring bought from joe,s. and upgraded to a 12volt alternator. i will not be driving much at night if any .

Re: 12 volt head lights

If you are concerned you can always install a relay. Relays are cheap and easy to install.

Re: 12 volt head lights

12 volt non-halogen sealed beams plug right in and work pretty well, if they are properly aimed.

Re: 12 volt head lights

You can just buy APF halogen globes, pop straight in. I rewired mine with relay's [12v].

Re: 12 volt head lights

I use a headlight relay from a 70's ford LTD /Thunderbird , its worked ok for the last 30 years, like stated above, the best way to go with the original headlight switch .

Re: 12 volt head lights

I have fitted high power 6 Volt Halogen Semi-sealed headlights to my '41 Coupe and so have fitted a 6 volt, period correct relay to the headlight circuit. I now have headlights operating on 6 volts that are comparable to most modern headlights, and considerably better than standard 12 volt sealed beams.
