How to fit a spare tire brace

How does one go about shortening a spare tire brace A163ABR (Mike's "A" Ford-able) or A-163-S (Snyder's) to support the rear carrier in a 1929 Coupe? Has anyone tried that.....or figured out another method to secure the upper bolt? Mike's says it can be used on 1928-1929 back panels, but must be shortened to fit.

I have a '31' Deluxe Coupe. I have the rear carrier spare tire mounted behind a 'rumble seat. I bought and installed the cast-iron support that connects to the upper/top bolt of the spare-tire mount and is bolted to the back floor panel under the rumble-seat. I had not problem with any clearance issues.

The cast-iron support is only for the 30-31 coupes. The support I referenced says it "can" be used on the 28-29 coupes. From the picture in the catalogs, I can't figure out how it fits nor how it needs to be shortened.

Still puzzled.

This is the Spare Tire Brace I was referencing. I can't figure out how it would fit my 1929 Coupe with rumble seat and rear spare tire carrier. Has anyone seen one of these modified to fit a 1928 or 1929 Coupe?

Instead of shortening, just buy the shorter one made for 1929. Originals pop up on ebay sometimes.

This brace is part of the inner structure of the panel below your rumble lid. Not visable unless you get on your back and look under the rear of your car. You sure its not already there.

Just cut a section out of it and weld it back together just make sure and not take too much out

What is the correct length for 1928-29? -- for 1930-31? Where are you measuring it?
I have one of these, but I don't know which one it is.

Re: How to fit a spare tire brace

I don't have exact measurements, but the taller outer panels were about 9" and the short ones about 7", with the braces probably about an inch or so shorter overall than this (i.e. 8" and 6") .

It's not totally a 28-29 vs 30-31 issue. The long ones were used on all year roadsters and 30-31 coupes. The short ones were used on all year cabriolets and 28-29 coupes. Some webpages/catalogs don't accurately reflect these applications.

I believe (but not positive) that the cast "banana" brace was also used on all rumble seat installations except for some very early 1928 vehicles.

If you still can't picture how it all goes together I can dig up some pictures or find some previous threads.

Thank you! Now I can see how it fits. Again, thanks!

I just saw an ad on eBay that says this piece is for Model A Coupes with trunks! Never saw that mentioned in any of the supply catalogs I have. Hmm....
I think the "banana" support is what I need with a rumble seat car.

Re: How to fit a spare tire brace

Marvin/TN...It's really not that easy. The angles change a lot. Also, the shorter one has a bit more curve to it. It's hard to adjust the curve as it is probably 12-14 gauge. A torch can do wonders.

But I've done it before too.

Here are a couple of links to previous threads with some pictures and info. Reproductions of both the outside and inside panels below the rumble lid are of notoriously poor quality if that's what you're working with.
