3.3 ohm, 12V Coil Question on Unilite Ignition

Is is ok to use this coil with a Mallory Unilite breakerless Ignition system.
My goal is to eliminate the ballast resistor and prevent the electronic module from overheating and burning up.

I think I read somewhere on HAMB that 3 ohm coils can be used on 4 and 6 cylinder engines only.
Thank you. JIM

Don't believe that is true, at least not in general, no idea on Unilite specific. 3 ohms is what you normally shoot for (1.5 coil + 1.5 ballast or 3.0 coil). But again, no idea on Unilite specific.

Re: 3.3 ohm, 12V Coil Question on Unilite Ignition

The '55 I bought came with a pertronix that usually calls for a 1.5 ohm coil. It had a 4 ohm coil working with the Pertronix. I changed to a later distributor and needed another Pertronix unit. I called pertronix and they said more resistance is fine, just maybe less high rpm performance. Again, not related to Mallory ignition.

Re: 3.3 ohm, 12V Coil Question on Unilite Ignition

The charge up time for the coil using it on a Flathead is a non issue and with the plug gap we have the voltage required is low so just about any coil will work fine.
The need for real high currents to be able to charge the coil fast is for the guys with wide plug gaps and scary high red lines on the tach.
So the 3 ohm coil will work fine.

I have Malllory Unilight fitted for 3 years or more and I use a 3 Ohm coil which seems to match just fine cheers

Dont know about the "Beru" blue coil. What we have used is the Bosch Blue at 3 ohms. With .025 plug gap and unilite ignition..

Sometimes theres a deal on Amazon.

The four cylinder discussion and 3 ohms concerns RPM. For high rpm engines the coil at 3 ohms dont have time for coil buildup at high rpm (7000 etc).
A flathead isnt considered a high rpm engine..
