Help. What size gear shift knob insert do I need?

I have a later Ford gear shift knob that i want to use on my 1929 Tudor stock trans shifter.
The later Ford gear shift knob has a larger threaded hole.
Does anyone know what size insert I would need to make up the difference?
Thanks, Neil

Determine the thread of your later knob. The A thread is 5/16-24.

You might even get lucky and buy a standard thread insert that matches both, yours on the outside and 5/16-24 on the inside.

The knob on my Speedster had a big metric thread. I went to the hardware and bought a bolt the same size, chucked it in my lathe and drilled the center with a tap drill then threaded it 5/16-18......the knob came with a metric nut so that let me turn the knob where I wanted it, then locked it in place. It is a #3 pool ball.

I once took a chrome "T" Holly shift handle and put it on a 68 Ford Mustang floor stick. I used two part epoxy for a filler and inserted a screw the same size (thread count and length) into the handle. After curing for two days, I was able to screw the handle onto the shift post.

To line up the handle to where I wanted, I dropped some rubber cement into the hole before I attached the knob. The knob was still there when I sold the car in 1975.

Fill the hole with J.B. WELD, oil the shifter threads, push it on & wipe the excess. Let it cure for 24 Hours.

Do either of these fit?

I did exactly as what Bill Williamson did. I used an old household Door knob and filled the square hole with JB Weld. Then I tapped with 5/16-24 or what ever threads, can't remember for sure. Works great for years.

Re: Help. What size gear shift knob insert do I need?

I found out that an insert would need to be 3/8-24 by 5/16-24. I check several insert websites, but they don't offer that size.
Does anyone know of a place I could get that size insert.
If I cannot find an insert I will use the jb-weld method that has been suggested.
