Painting 52 f1 firewall

1 Attachment(s)
Hi guys

The firewall on my F1, is beat. The truck is a driver.

I don’t want to pull engine and am thinking an attempt to paint.

I’m thinking of using rust-o-lium flat black, with a brush.

I would like your thought / suggestions

Remove as much wiring and other parts from the firewall as possible and wrap other nearby engine parts like steering column, etc with aluminum foil. Tape off the perimeter of the firewall and spray paint it. Brush will leave streaks and finish won't be as nice. I like acrylic enamel as it's easier to clean.

I would do as 19Fordy suggests , only I would look around for some red spray paint that is close to the truck color . If you have to go black , I would go w/a satin , or semi gloss , as it will look better than flat . Flat sometimes just looks like primer .

Spray with Rustoleum Satin. The brush strokes will drive you crazy, and the spray is easier to touch up later. For real small touch-up I spray some of the paint onto a paper plate and use a small watercolor brush. Then I just throw it away. I always have a package of these somewhere in the shop.

Buy a pint of single stage urethane or single stage enamel. You can put it right over the old paint without priming unless its lacquer. Clean it with coleman fuel or = on a rag. the spray with silicon wax remover and wipe some more. scuff it with 400 and a red scotch brite the best you can. Tape everything with masking tape / grocery bags and spray away. It will hold up forever...Rustoleum will flatten in a short period of time and is not nearly as resilient to fuel and "stuff" A touch up gun will get in there real nice. Take off big items like battery and air cleaner...I did this on a 78 jeep truck for my friend and he drivers it all year, holding up nice.

I use the aluminum foil method saves alot of time around the wiring..thats an easy job you have, did a many engine compartments.

The vermillion red is available in spray cans for the Ford tractor guys since they used that color. Black hides the nasties a bit longer though.

If he wants to brush and wants black...how about POR frame paint? I used POR for the first time a couple months ago. Restored a 55 year old municipal fire hydrant with their red...brushed it on and turned out great.

I thought brushing would be better as there are some tight spots (like behind oil canister and worse yet the fuel pump).

But I also agree, I don’t want to look like my 8 year old grandson did it.

Ideal would be brush without brush marks, much like engine paint I used on my 39.

Re: Painting 52 f1 firewall

After buying my f1 a dozen or so years ago I wanted to do a color change from white to meadow green because the factory white looked blah to me. The one issue that held me back from doing that color change was the firewall; I knew I'd have to pull the engine to do it right and feel good with the overall result. So after pondering the added workload of pulling the front clip and sliding out the recently rebuilt 8ba, I just bit the bullet and wound up disassembling the entire truck. Glad I did that. The end result was certainly worth the extra effort.

This " tin foil over the wiring " is a great idea ! It is probably nothing new , but I had not heard it before . I will however, be trying it in the future !

Thanks & Happy Holidays - F F

Any of the brush on engine paints will look great and leave no brush marks - KBS and Hirsh are two brands I have used ....
