1937 crank pulley seal? Hey fellas,
So my crank pulley is leaking so I assume it’s the seal. I recently purchased this but is it correct for my car? http://i66.tinypic.com/313rjnq.jpg I understand that originally it had some sort of rope seal but I want to upgrade it so I don’t have any issue I’m the future. With that said will this kit work even though it says 49-53? http://i66.tinypic.com/157lr91.jpg Any mods I need to do to the crank shaft? |
Re: 1937 crank pulley seal? In order to use the metal sleeve, you will need to remove a like amount from the crank pulley. No mods to the crank shaft.

Re: 1937 crank pulley seal? I would say if the OD of the pulley and the sleeve are exactly the same, no.

Re: 1937 crank pulley seal? If the pulley isn´t worn it wil work fine...they can have kind of a valley in them from the ropeseal wearing against it.
Cutting the pulley depends on how they are built...some just have the contact area against the crank at the ends and you end up with a loose fitting pulley. A speedy sleeve might be a better option in that case. |
Re: 1937 crank pulley seal? And some pulleys have a helical groove cut into them. These are not too good with your one piece type seal. So if you have this style, machine grooves off and fit a thin wall sleeve, then the seal will have a smooth surface to run on. To fit the seal you'll need to remove the timing cover and oil pan. Normally use silicon rubber sealant or similar to glue the seal into the grooves. A bit of work to cure a leak. Good luck

Re: 1937 crank pulley seal? I think the sleeve that comes with the one-piece seal will not work on your pulley, i.e. too thick. But, as noted above, a speedy sleeve to cover the groves will do the trick and no more leaks!!!

Re: 1937 crank pulley seal? So here’s the crank pulley I have now. It fits over the crank shaft fairly tight but I’m able to slide it on and off without any tools and there is a very minut amount of wiggle if I wiggle it. I assume the metal sleeve won’t wrk with this type of fit. So my question is do I have the wrong rubber seal or will the one I have still work?

Re: 1937 crank pulley seal? See the groove worn into the pulley seal area? You are going to have to address that issue.
|
Re: 1937 crank pulley seal? Your rubber seal will work but as noted, you need to repair that groove worn in it.

Re: 1937 crank pulley seal? Solo, I believe the speedy sleeve is your easiest way to provide a smooth surface for the new neoprene seal. It will cover up the groove. You drive the sleeve onto the pulley snout. It come with a "cap" to allow you to press the sleeve on.

Re: 1937 crank pulley seal? You should be able to get a sleeve that will fit it with minor cleanup of your current surface.

Re: 1937 crank pulley seal? Speedi-sleeve by Chicago Rawhide. #99162. NAPA did sell them. Here it is. I used this one on my '51 Merc. Check size against yours.

Re: 1937 crank pulley seal? Solo, the install video that Tony referenced above will give you a better picture on how these thin sleeves work on our flat head pulleys. If you don't feel comfortable or have access to a micrometer to measure diameter and length of the area you need to repair, another option is to take your pulley to a machine shop and let them put the proper sized sleeve on for you. As to whether or not you can buy a new pulley, bear in mind that these were all intended to be used with the rope seal, so finding one that's set up for the new one piece might be a challenge.
