Door Check Straps...

Most, if not all reproduction rubber "Door Check Straps" are black. Does anyone have a source for check straps that are the original brown color?

I find it strange that whoever is making these "black" straps, can't just change the color of the rubber to match the original color. AH but alas...it probably would cost that person much more money to produce by changing the color.

Thanks.

Pluck

Steve,
Richard Kilburn made some a while back. I bought a couple sets from him. I think Hunter Fanney also bought a pair for his Henry awarded 29 special coupe. His email 2 years ago was or is: [email protected]. I don't know if it is still current. The check straps were brown and even had the script F for Firestone on them. They looked real good.

Only black front arm rests are reproduced for my 1950 Studebaker, and I never could find the correct brown ones, so I finally went to the auto parts store and bought a spray paint for vinyl, and it sure works great. It's the perfect color and match to the NOS rear arm rests. This is Bluebird Brown 154483

Thanks Tom...It is to bad that there is not a process to "bleed" the black out of the black rubber then dye it dark brown!

Yo Pluck: I am on the performance side of the hobby but really respect and encourage you and the guys who do the restorations and want to keep history alive. 90 years from now my speedster will be gone, but I hope what you guys are doing lives on. (PS maybe my engine and running gear survive. (:-)). The color of the check straps is a pretty arcane matter, but should be preserved and I hope someone can find it.

That works good on vinyl, which is pretty stable. I used it on arm rests for my MGBGT. I doubt if it would work on the door check straps, since they stretch when the door is opened, and bend when it is shut.

Again, why the maker of these black repros can not just change the color of the rubber and make them right is beyond me...probably cost to much to do so.

Re: Door Check Straps...

Several years ago at Hershey, I bought a pair of NOS brown straps for my 29 Tudor. I better measure them to see how long they are. I know they have the "F" for Firestone. I'll also see how the color compares to the ones I did for my Studebaker.

Re: Door Check Straps...

That begs the question, what is the right length for a Tudor?

If I'm reading the Standards correctly 8 1/2", with side mount spare 6 1/8".

Re: Door Check Straps...

I don't have a side mount spare. So I'm guessing 8" is what I need.

I really need to get a set of these 'Standards' so I can 'learn to fish' (so to speak...)

Thanks!
Ted

Re: Door Check Straps...

I just dug out my brown door check, and it's overall length is 8 1/2".
At the end of the rib pattern it says "PAT.JUNE 30, 1925" and under that is the letter "T".
At the other end is the letter "G".
I wonder if that stands for Goodyear?

Re: Door Check Straps...

I checked that ebay link. They 6, 7, and 8" check straps. Just incase anyone was looking for longer brown straps.

Steve, I have one NOS strap, and three of the correct reproduction ones, 8-1/2", brown, Firestone logo. I was going to use them on a car that I was restoring for show, but that project got canceled.
I have attached two photos of the straps to this post. The first photo shows one side of the straps, then I turned them over to show the other side. In each photo, the strap at the far left is the NOS one and the other three are the reproduction ones. The reproduction ones look good on one side, however the opposite side has some flaws. I would have to say that the reproduction ones are "seconds", not "first quality". However, they were the only ones that I have been able to find of this length. I do not know who manufactured the reproduction straps, but I purchased them from another FordBarn member. I've had NOS of the shorter straps but have already sold them.

Here's my original door check strap and the Studebaker arm rest I changed from black to brown.
As you can see, the strap is darker. I'll have to see if the parts store has the right color.
