Valve retaining clip

I have removed all the valves on this 37 engine no problems except the last one no. 7 intake clip Just won't come out, It's very loose but won't pop out. I've tried tapping it above the clip, yes I have made a wire puller, even have a heavier hook ( radiatior hose remover) squirted it, tapped this way, that way but it won't come off the guide. I'm worried if I keep working it I'll snap the tag of and then I'll really be in trouble.. Should I just try take the cam out and will the lifter just fall out and keep at it ? Any further tricks?? Frustrated..

with that valve up you should be able to reach the top of valve guide with a small drift pin. drive guide down a hair and clip will come out. you are lucky you have only one stuck as i have seen motors in which i could get only one out!

Are you repairing a running engine or stripping a block for a rebuild? Some removal methods are more aggressive than others. I just bought NORS exhaust valves for 8 bucks apiece.

Re: Valve retaining clip

I am stripping everything however all the parts are serviceable so I don't want to butcher anything..

Geez where did all the engine builders go today ..??

Marko39's suggestion seems like the way to go. Maybe try some penetrating oil for a few days, and/or some gentle heat before trying it.

Re: Valve retaining clip

suppooooosably you can put wood wedges in to retain the spring/valves and pull the cam, turn the block over so the lifter is down, so i've heard.... I wouldn't pull the cam without retaining or removing the springs.

A spare ford horseshoe clip wouldn't be difficult here to find.

....With that said and being one valve. Flip the block and use a valve fork to compress the spring. Then have someone pull the cam out. done.

or one of these...

Re: Valve retaining clip

I have a mate that has something similar that sneaks behind the valve, but I couldn't quite get how you lift the valve up far enough to get it behind?? Frustrating as I have given it a decent tug and that damn clip wont pop out, loose as but ...nup! I'll have another crack when I get home .

Re: Valve retaining clip

You take the keeper on the bottom out and then the valve comes up enough to get guide driver in.
Tap the guide down a bit to get the horseshoe clip out.
If you got all the rest of them out that easy you should buy a lottery ticket...your on a roll !!
Half of mine takes a plasmatorch and boltcutter to get apart.

Re: Valve retaining clip

Got it! Had another crack at it used the heavier hook bent it out of shape a bit but it eventually popped out, all good.

So now the next stage of the engine build... Stay tuned!
