Front Brake rod initial adjustment I'm just finishing up the front brakes on my 28 and was just wondering where to set the clevis at the end of the brake rod to get a good starting point to begin adjusting the brakes?
I've replaced all the service brake and parking brake rods and anti rattlers as well. So I guess my question is what is the correct length from brake rod eye to clevis eye or how much of the threads should be exposed at the end of the rod to get a good starting point? And do I need shims with the operating pins if everything is new? Thanks, Isaiah. |
Re: Front Brake rod initial adjustment Are you following the instructions in the Model A Ford Mechanics Handbook, by Les Andrews? If so follow the Service Brake Adjustment starting on page 2-1.
Here are some of the steps but I will not type all of them. If you do not have the Handbook I can post the 5 pages for you. With the brake rods not connected to the front or rear actuating arms: The Brake cross shaft should be in a vertical position. Your front brake actuating arm should lean 15 degrees forward. Add pills to the wedge to position the actuating arm if necessary. |
Re: Front Brake rod initial adjustment You haven't mentioned that you have the shoes on both wheels adjusted to the point where they are both slightly grabbing equally on both wheels. This is the very first step in the adjustment process. Once this is completed then you can follow the instructions in post #2
