Re: Front Crank Seal Direction The rounded edge goes to the outside. The flat edge goes to the crank. Soak it in oil for a few hours before you install it. I use a socket on its side and lightly tap the seal into place. When you install the crank and pan it will pull together.

Re: Front Crank Seal Direction Are you talking a rope seal, as original?
Or, did you buy the one piece seal? I like the original rope seal, but if you have the one piece, the open side faces the rear of the engine. Be sure to smear grease on the lip of the seal. The seal also needs to be locked in place with silicone, as I understand it, so that must be done just as the oil pan is ready to be bolted in place. If it's a rope seal, I never soak them in oil, but squirt oil on after it's installed in the slot, and I also smear grease on the rubbing surface. |
Re: Front Crank Seal Direction "A-6700-M FRONT CRANK SEAL
No modifications to engine required. Replaces B-6700-A packings. Fits 1928-34 4 cyl. and 1932-53 V8 engines. Install with lip towards rear of engine. Rubbing surface must be smooth and not worn. Original shaft diameter is 1.625 inches. Deburr crank pulley before assembly. Bed the OD of the seal in silicone gasket sealant." Notice where it says, "Rubbing surface must be smooth and not worn" They really mean mirror finished and tracks absolutely true. Anything but dead smooth and any "wobble" and the seal will fail to keep the oil in the engine. Don't just take my word for it, do a search for "modern seal" here on the barn. |
Re: Front Crank Seal Direction Right. I always assume guys are building stock. Not always true.

What type seal , i.e.- rope, cork, modern, are you installing/asking about  FWIW, I've currently installed two modern front seals, and in past other types...no leaks. |
