37 rod bearings

the new rod bearings for my 37 are flanged. Do these still need to be fitted using the hammer method?

Yea, I asked about that on my '37 rebuild thread. Same procedure, just takes longer because you have to keep removing and replacing the rod cap to check the fit. I just went through it on Monday.

Ol Ron covers how he does bearing fitting in his book "Nostalgia". Probably covered in other Flathead publications as well.

Martin has it.37 was a mixed year where Ford went from flanged to non-flanged bearings. I always have the rods honed for .001-.0015 oversize. More for racing.

Ron Horrell is replacing the 296 I built for him back in the late 90's (over 50K on it now) with his new Blown engine. It was built the old way, stroked Merc crank and 21A rods. I'll be curious to see how they held up.

Re: 37 rod bearings

so do they have to float both over the crank journal AND inside the rod at the same time or just either one freely.

The goal is to allow an even coat of oil to flow through all bearing surfaces to lubricate and cool.

Re: 37 rod bearings

Regarding post #6. I have never seen an original '37 engine that did not have flanged rod bearings. I don't think there were any non-flanged bearings.

Re: 37 rod bearings

V8fornman. You maybe right, as I haven't worked on many 37's. I think the flanged bearing went out in 38, but it's been so long. I cut the flanges off and use the bearings on the stroker cranks.
