21 stud timing cover differences?
 

Need another timing gear cover for my '36 flathead, are all 21 stud timing covers interchangeable and look the same? The one I currently have has 4 mounting holes for the distributor but distributor only has three mounting bolt holes. There's nothing wrong with the timing cover I have now, I just want another one for a timing pointer that I will install.

Could it be that one of the holes is for the vacuum advance?

Sounds like You have a later cover, is the ditributor flat or helmet shaped?

Obviously am not explaining myself well; I just want to get another timing gear cover for my '36 21 stud motor and want to know what other years would work. The three bolt helmet dizzy works fine with the 4 hole timing cover I have now; I just want another cover, don't care if it's 3 holes or four.

There was a very early four BOLT distibutor in 1932 but it was recalled due to problems. The one with three bolts and a vacuum port was a later item. All the three Bolt covers will work as long as you have a vacuum supply for the brake appropriate for the distributor you want to use.

You'll care if it's got the wrong BOLT pattern/number.
What you need is another three BOLT timing cover. The two BOLT cover (has two bolt holes and one vacuum hole) won't work for you, your ignition won't bolt on.
So, go into the swap meet section and place an add wanting a three bolt timing cover.

I'm pretty much repeating the above post, trying to make it clearer for you. It's all about the bolt holes, don't include the other vacuum hole.

Helmet distributor uses a vacuum line not a cover hole???

Three bolt is what ya have wheres the fourth hole ?????

You can drill one of the timing cover mounting bolts and fabricate a pointer pin to fit it.

No Jim, I'm the confused party here; the cover is three hole and for some reason I thought it was 4 hole, senior moment!

We have boxes full of NOS 3 bolt timing covers (18-6019) and they sell for $19 each.

Sorry, rotorwrench, I didn't mean to imply they didn't exist, I was referring to the one in question. It was at first stated to be a 4 bolt, but that was a case of mistaken information.

The 3-hole dizzy-to-cover gasket actually has four holes in it.......possibly the root of the original confusion. DD

Sorry I didn't read all the way through. Junior moment for me haha ( opposite of a senior moment). I had a glimmer of hope that maybe he had uncovered one of the illusive early 32 recalled timing gear covers
