'36 Transmission cover question
 

My transmission cover has what appears to be a louver stamped into it (center of photo) that has been bent at some point. It seems to me to be a strange place for a louver, so thought I'd see if anyone recognizes this and can tell me what it's shape should be. This one is bent to the point where it's hard to tell whats going on.

thats how you read the vin no. its stamped on trans case

So it should normally be matching the contour of the rest of the part? I'm going to flatten it back out before having the parts coated.

I have one of those covers around somewhere but I don't think it's supposed to be flattened but raise up like the one shown.

I don't know much about the 36 but it looks like a knock out plug to me. I figure you could level it back down if you want to. As long as your car is registered and you already know the VIN, you don't need to see the number that much. Heat always finds its way into the cab on the old Fords. I don't think I'd want to help it out much but then I live in the south Texas hot country.

Most DMV's don't know or care about the number on the transmission. They go by the number on the frame.

Push it back down level with the contour of the surrounding sheet metal. Put some tape over top to seal it up, and cover with your floor mat.

On the several covers that I have it is straight and only open about an 1/8". It would have to be pried up in order to see anything below it. Yours looks like that's what happened to it.

Thanks for all the good info, I knew that someone would have a handle on that. There was a nice surprise waiting under there: the transmission number and frame numbers match. Cool.
