rear drum bearing I read a while ago that guys were reusing their old bearing because the repops where not holding up. Does anyone know if the usual venders have fixed and replaced their stock? Is this bearing pictured an original? How does one tell? My bearings look ok, but the cage is all scuffed up. Should I just replace it with a new one?
Thanks, Zack |
Re: rear drum bearing Looks like an original to me. Just looked at mine ,were purchased years ago, still look OK.

Re: rear drum bearing I also think it looks original, and I'd use it if the rollers aren't worn.

Re: rear drum bearing yea originals looked like they were taken to a belt sander on the ends to get rid of any burrs or sharp edges.

Re: rear drum bearing I experienced rear hub bearing failure recently after only 500 miles with bearings that came from one of the popular vendors. The bearings were sold to me in December 2012. I posted a thread about it. They agreed to replace all of the damaged parts and I was very happy with that. However, last week I received new bearings from them, and unfortunately they are very poorly manufactured. The end plates were warped, and the the holding pins are tilted when you look at them on a level surface. I returned them and I asked for a credit. Try to find NOS bearings or use your old ones if they seem to be good. It is imperative to your safety, you don't want a wheel falling off! I believe I have seen two versions of older bearings. Ones with grooved rollers and no holding pins and later ones that have no grooves and six pins. Both of these seem to be ok. Also, I believe the older bearings had hollow rollers with pins through them. The ones you get today are solid rollers.

Re: rear drum bearing I mentioned this in the other thread call Joe at tams model A he has a special source for quality bearings. Talk to him it's only a phone call. It seems like sometimes you're talking to a wall.

Re: rear drum bearing Mitch, I had called Tam's. His catalog indicated that his bearings are USA made & I was excited and planned on ordering them. Unfortunately he told me he no longer has USA made bearings and he couldn't tell me if the ones he has were any different than the ones sold by Bratton's, which have been the known defective ones.
I can post photos of early original Ford bearings with the spiral cylinders, the later B style ones, and the crappy ones being sold today if anyone is interested. Bottom line, if you've replaced your wheel bearings in recent years, consider inspecting them. I finally found a pair of NOS Ford B-1225-A bearings. I plan on installing them this week. |
