Chevy water pump on flat tie
 

Hi guys , am in the process of putting a blower on my flat head. I have been told that a 348 chevy pump can be used with an adaptor. anyone have any experience. I can't use the original pumps because of clearance problem. Thank you.

Bak in the 60's we welded a spacer to a 1/4 piece of aluminum to bolt one of those 348/409 water pumps on the stock car hoping iy would cool better. Unfortunately it didn't work, still ran hot. But the adapters were easy to make and I;ve seen several on some street engines. Aftermarket ones are VERY expensive.

This is very expensive and it would be interesting to know how many gallons this pump produces in a 5 minute time period. Stock and after market 37 to 53 pumps deliver about 65 gallons each in 5 minutes and can vary a little but not much. Skips pumps with the body modifications and his turbine impeller delivers 110 gallons each in 5 minutes. Every pump is set up with exactly the same clearances and everyone is tested and delivers 110 gallons. The out put is variable depending on the ENGINE RPM's and the tests are run at 2,500 RPM's. The 3,400 RPM electric motor on his test machine went bad and was replaced by a 1,700 RPM motor and the output of the pumps dropped from 110 to 55 GPM. This also explains part of the reason these engines run hotter at idle and lower speeds. I seriously doubt the Chevy pump delivers anywhere near the 220 gallons that of the two Ford modified pumps deliver. G.M.

What exactly is having the clearance issues? Belt drive to radiator?

Being also a 348/409 guy, I don't think you'll wind up saving much space (if any) by switching from the stock flathead ones if your clearance issue is between the pump and the radiator.

A stock '58 pump supposedly puts out a flow rate in the low 50's GPM at 4000 rpm using the stock pulley.

An individual Ford pump may be able to pump 110 GPM on a stand, but I really doubt it'll pump that much once you put a restrictive old Ford radiator in front of it.

EDIT: Just realized that you stated 110 gallons in 5 minutes for the Ford pump, for a total of 44 GPM. The GM pump would be at >250 gallons over 5 minutes.
