Flywheel question

Is there a way to check a flywheel to see if the surface needs to be machined after it is removed and cleaned??

Thanks!!

Re: Flywheel question

You look for grooves in the surface and burn marks. Take a straight edge to the face to see it its flat. I have always had it resurfaced, with it already out of the car or truck.

Re: Flywheel question

Important are:
1. Clutch face is parallel to the crankshaft flange;
2. Clutch face is flat, so no clutch chatter;
3. Ring gear is a snug fit.

Consider having the flywheel lightened and machine for a V8 clutch. Doing so will decrease the stress in the rear main bearing, make shifting easier, enable quicker acceleration and facilitate braking.
