bore gauge

I,m going to buy a bore gauge ,to measure my rods and bores,I borrowed one from a mate and they make measuring so much easier than using telescopic gauges and a mike.
I know that mitutoyo make rurally good quality stuff (expensive),but see that there is a brand called FOWLER on Ebay, they seem a lot cheaper ,
would any one have any knowledge of the fowler ones.
I,m thinking fowler maybe a western brand ,but you know how the Ch------ work.
Thanks Lawrie

Re: bore gauge

I use a Mitutoyo it has given me good service over the years. Fowler is a
cheaper made unit. It may work for you if you don't use it a lot.

Re: bore gauge

I've used quite a bit of fowler stuff with good sucess, although I am retired and don't do any outside work anymore. If I used it often I would invest in a good unit that will outlast the off brand, I am a Jouneyman machiist ,the job is only as good as the quality you put into it.

Re: bore gauge

I have both Fowler and Mitutoyo (and others) and in the right hands they all do the same thing. I like the Mitutoyo better than Fowler but maybe because I paid so much more for them?

Re: bore gauge

I know Fowler used to be good quality, but might want to check to see where they are made now.

I have a set of dial bore gauge made in some eastern country, repeatable, but over all size measurements are off...even worse when I use the spacer, so I have to use my good calipers to double check things, but did save a lot of money, and didn't have to sleep at a Holiday Inn;)

The wooden box is nice though!
