1940 Ford Steering Wheel What is available on the aftermarket for a 40 Ford Delux steering wheel ? I am keeping the original steering column , which fastens the wheel with a key way, and nut , so the wheels that are splined to fit the IDIDIT and GM columns will not work on the original column. I see the splined wheels are also available in 15 and 16 inch diameter, does anybody make the original wheel in the smaller diameters or are they all 17 inch ???
Any ideas or comments from your experience ??? Thanks! Steve |
Re: 1940 Ford Steering Wheel Limeworks makes I think a 16 inch stock appearing 40 wheel that mounts on an original column.

Re: 1940 Ford Steering Wheel I'll second Limeworks, but be prepared to put in some time in prep if you're going to paint the wheel yourself.

Re: 1940 Ford Steering Wheel Vintique 15" wheel will work on original shaft.

Re: 1940 Ford Steering Wheel Bob Drake Reproductions or Dennis Carpenter sells nice wheels.

Re: 1940 Ford Steering Wheel "Vintique 15" wheel will work on original shaft"
Where do you get them? All the 15" Vintique ones I can find i.e Speedway motors etc, all say they fit a late model GM column. Can you buy an adaptor to make them fit? |
Re: 1940 Ford Steering Wheel Vintique make 2 types. First is a reproduction of an original wheel....very nice. They are available thru retail vintage Ford dealers...aka Drake, etc. The second wheel they produce is slightly smaller in diameter and has provisions to fit later steering shafts and turn signals....also very nice. Available at retail stores. They come complete with horn button, and spring.
They are black and will require painting for original colors. enjoy. |

Re: 1940 Ford Steering Wheel This was from Parr Automotive in OKC. $283.00

Re: 1940 Ford Steering Wheel How can the Vintique wheel fit both a splined aftermarket column , like IDIDIT or Flaming River , GM repro's ,etc and ALSO FIT THE ORIGINAL FORD COLUMN THAT ATTACHES WITH A KEY WAY AND NUT????
Steve |
Re: 1940 Ford Steering Wheel The repro wheel I have used several times in the past had an interchangeable hub which bolted in.
|
Re: 1940 Ford Steering Wheel Now, THAT is a great idea!
Who makes that wheel? |
Re: 1940 Ford Steering Wheel Parr has it in their catalog as does Sachse Rod Shop. Both state that it fits both, no hub change. This is the wheel I have. Since I had no reason to see if it fit a tapered shaft with a key, I can't explain how. I really don't want to pull my wheel off right now, maybe you could call either of them and ask. Sachse is 800-495-3904 Parr is 800-654-6779

Re: 1940 Ford Steering Wheel 2 Attachment(s)
I just recently bought a used Vintique 15" diameter wheel on Ebay for $127.00.
It was painted bright red (the seller had painted it to match his interior, but said that once installed it did not look appropriate on his Oldsmobile resto-mod). The hub has dual machining (both a taper with the keyway, and the GM splines) and can be installed onto the stock 1940 Ford steering shaft or a later model GM column. My car happens to be bright red (modified!), so I might leave the wheel red... or change the color later to better match my car's interior. |
Re: 1940 Ford Steering Wheel Thanks push rod for clearing that up.

Re: 1940 Ford Steering Wheel 2 Attachment(s)
This is a Vintique wheel. I did not paint the rim because it was such a nice black finish out of the box and I think it will resist wear better than paint.

Re: 1940 Ford Steering Wheel Go for the Limeworks wheel.
http://cdn.shopify.com/s/files/1/030...g?v=1392406939 They also have others to fit the tapered shaft. http://limeworksspeedshop.com/ |
Re: 1940 Ford Steering Wheel The Limeworks wheel in a stock '40 (16" wheel) looks better than a 15" wheel in a stock 40. What's wrong with using the repo stock 17" wheel on the stock column? Just curious.
