Best way to cool my 41/motor swap I'm looking for ideas to run a "51" 8BA engine in a "41" sedan. The problem I'm having is the new "51" fan hit's the top of the radiator outlets. The original fan was mounted on the crankshaft.Just wondering about eletric fan or radiator mods/aftermarket parts. Thanks for your time. Bob.so far so good!

Re: Best way to cool my 41/motor swap I had to run an electric fan in my 40 coupe with an 8BA styled engine. But, if you go to a slightly smaller fan, or find a way to drop it down lower off of the generator mount, and/or you could re-route your upper rad hoses to go outside the stock fan path and make rt angle upper radiator outlets to accommodate this.
Just a thought ..... |
Re: Best way to cool my 41/motor swap Why not use your crank mounted fan on the 51? You can cut the back of the sleeve off of the 41 fan pulley so that it will butt up to the wear sleeve on the 8BA engine. Worked in my 39.

Re: Best way to cool my 41/motor swap I think the 41 car is like the 46-48.
Some have wide and narrow belts pulley. wide belt use 49 ford or mercury, narrow use later. mounts under gen. move up and down some. |
Re: Best way to cool my 41/motor swap Here's a way oldskool kept the fan in the original location...

Re: Best way to cool my 41/motor swap With the 8BA in my '39, I had the radiator shop remove the original radiator inlets and install 8BA size 1 1/4 inlets at the very top of the radiator tank. I am using a truck fan and have about 1/2" clearance between the fan and top and bottom radiator hoses.

Re: Best way to cool my 41/motor swap Hi flat 39, are you thinkin' about making the run up to the Moonshine Festival with the Cigar City Flatheads? Let me know, we'd love to have you come with us. Vic

Re: Best way to cool my 41/motor swap If a 41 is like a 46-48 your fan location is in same place.
I just replaced a 59ab with a 8rt 1953 truck engine. The truck fan stickers out to far. Wide belt engine use a 49 ford or merc fan. later use double pulley narrow belt. This fan in pic was from a 39 standard with 8ba engine looks to be madifided with bolt pattern with newer flex fan. https://www.fordbarn.com/forum/pictur...ictureid=28442 |
Re: Best way to cool my 41/motor swap A 41 engine is not like a 46-48, it's like a 39 and 40.

Re: Best way to cool my 41/motor swap flatjack9 has it. measure from the wear sleeve that is on the 8BA crank out to where you want the belt to run to match up with your water pumps and cut off the part that runs against the front seal in the earlier engine.

Re: Best way to cool my 41/motor swap I have adapted a crank mounted fan to an 8BA and it tends to run a little hot in traffic,i installed an electric pusher fan and not much improvement,i have a aluminum rad and it runs cool on the road until I hit traffic ,I seen a 41 with a 46-48 radiator and running an 8ba fan set up,looked like the radiator was raised up with spacers to clear upper water inlets, you may be able to just raise your 41 rad a few inches to clear the water inlets, I picked up an original 46 ford radiator and a 50 pickup wide belt fan setup and I plan on installing in my 41 it over the winter.

Re: Best way to cool my 41/motor swap I put a shroud on my 39. Runs great with stock radiator. Runs just as cool as GM's (chuckle)

Re: Best way to cool my 41/motor swap I'm going to call my radiator shop tomorrow and see what they can do. This seems like a quick fix that should last a life time,Thanks.

Re: Best way to cool my 41/motor swap It's great to have so much support for these early fords. I'am going to send the original '41 engine in for inspection and machine work and hope to rebuild it myself(with a little help from Bill Kemp) "oh" and Phill at Gunn machine shop in Denver. Thanks guy's!!
