using a manual choke like this...is this normal?
 

I have a 1953 f100 with the stock flathead and fordomatic trans. The truck runs well when its up to about 180 degrees. Before its at about that temp, it kind of stalls a bit from a complete stop like it isnt getting enough fuel. It has a 2bbl holley 94 carb (just rebuilt), new fuel pump and all new fuel lines.

The problem is gone if you pull the manual choke halfway out until it is up to normal operating temperature. Is it normal to have to do that?

Depending on a number of conditions and settings each engine can be different. I'm up in the northeast and always need to use the choke for a while until the engine gets moderately warm. If you haven't already, hook-up a vacuum gauge and make sure the carb is adjusted to its best settings, and check for vacuum leaks. Good luck.

I've yet to begin my current flathead project, however, I can testify that when I learned to to drive dad's '53 Mainline sedan, to take my driving test, that was the order of the day. Full choke to start, half choke to run until warm. Enjoy yer day, Tom

Sounds pretty normal to me!!
