Black Model A Fords
 

Photo thread requested

If you all would please accommodate my request here, I'd like to see a thread devoted primarily to "Black Model A Fords", I searched the forum but did not find such a thread, although there are interesting discussions on black as a primary color. EDIT: Apologies if I have created a duplicate thread; if so, please point me to it.

I posted previously about my 30 Tudor and plans to get it back on the road as a local driver, but not a show car. I am planning to go with black paint, black wheels, and blackwall tires and keep it as original as practical. The wheels have been painted black since my original post here, and the car is now running fine. My hope was to re-use the old Allstate nylon tires, but examination of them after removal from the wheels has revealed too much rot; so looking at the new Goodyears now.

My local painter says he likes DuPont paints but has no experience with Model A's, so I am particularly interested in results using that brand of black paint for a Model A. Thanks for any participation here---Tudors, Coupes, Pickups, anything black!

I have been painting my E28 truck the last few months. I have used implement paint straight from the John Deere Dealer. It cost 7 bucks a quart, and you can spray it on heavy to kind of hide some waves in panels, and if it gets scratched it can be buffed out. She is really turning out fine!!

Johh, thanks. I have recently used John Deere dealer paints on my 1957 420 tractor. I think they are great, and the gloss black has also been used on some of my small Model A parts. From the tractor forums I read, the genuine JD dealer-sold paints (Valspar?) are better than the hardware store stuff sold as JD colors.

I would worry about a painter that says he knows nothing about painting model a's. Did he say why he thinks this car is different then any other car he has painted?

My pickup was black when I bought it. Wouldn't change it! Understand that the 29 closed cab pickup had a black paint option when new.

Please don't over-think me on this statement. I merely meant he had never painted one, and was not into the minutia of the history of the Model A as we are on this board. FYI, another friend of mine who previously worked in a paint and body shop has been prepping the car, removing dents, and priming it at his garage. Final paint will be done at the painter's shop here in my small town.

Thank you both for the links. I have seen almost all of them in my searches, and gleaned info from them. To clarify, my idea here was a photo thread of exclusively black cars, as I just thought that would be interesting. Open to any constructive criticism.

I'm glad you started this thread as I am planning on going black as well and I have started bodywork also. I do all my own prep and paint so I'm trying to get everything as straight as possible. Black will show every wave and ding. I wanted to post on here a few questions I had last night while sanding the passenger door but sometimes I feel some questions might be bothersome compared to more technical questions posted here. Well, since the subject has been raised I suppose I will ask now on a seperate thread. Anyhow, what are everyone's thoughts on the sheen of black to be used inside the cab? I know a gloss black was prably used but I can't picture the paint on these cars brand new looking as shiny as the new cars nowadays. To see what it looked like I sprayed my gas tank and dash area semi gloss black and it came out perfect to what I would think would be a authentic paint sheen for a new model A. I know it comes down to preference but how do y'all feel about it? More of an original look or just fancy shiny black all the way? The other problem I will be facing after paint is to leave the orange peel or sand smooth and buff out. I will try and and lay the paint as smooth as possible but I know I will be facing the same question, did model A's off the assembly line have mirror smooth paint jobs or just as smooth as they could get with the guns and buffing. Authentic looking or fancy wancy restoration. Decisions decisions.

I like black Model A's and that coupe is a great example. For me a good black has a blue hue in it, otherwise the black color seems a little muddy. This car is a good example of black.

Anyone have an idea of the percentage of Model "A" Fords originally painted ALL BLACK?

Please acquire a copy of the Model A Ford Painting Guide. There is tons of information on how the cars were painted. The bodies were painted with Nitrocelus (sp) Lacquer. They were buffed to a mirror finish. Some of the parts vendors catalogs have pictures of the cars on the assembly line that bear this out.
None the less, you should paint your car as you think it should look.

For a real black color, use Nason FUL-THANE 2K URETHANE SS CODE: DX8 THIS A 1950 CHRYSLER COLOR URETHANE IS A VERY TOUGH PAINT & REALY SHINES
