Valve timing

Bi Guys,
I have had my engine rebuilt and assembled by our local auto engineering shop.
My question to you. Is it possible to miss align the cam gears and thereby screwing up the cam and valve timing?
The engine started up quite easily but doesn't run very well. When opening the throttle from idle or while driving, the engine sounds as if it gags at about quarter to half throttle, loud sucking with loss of power and RPM.
PLEASE HELP.
Regards
Chris

YES they can be assembled incorrectly.

Re: Valve timing

they can but usually are not. a quick check is to remove the spark plugs and watch the valves as you rotate the engine. with the #1 piston at TDC on the overlap position, rock the crank back and forth and both valves should move. this will only get you close but will help you decide if the timing is the problem more than likely it is ignition or fuel mixture.

Is it possible to miss align the cam gears and thereby screwing up the cam and valve timing? Yes, that is possible. The dimple on the crank gear and the dimple on the timing gear must be in alignment when assembling.
A Model A with a newly rebuilt engine came into my shop for poor running problems. Started fine. Idled fine. Rev-up poor. Would get up to 30 mph if you had about a mile of straight and level road and had the pedal on the floor.
The timing gear was one tooth (retarded) off from the crank gear.
Ran fine when timing corrected.

Re: Valve timing

Tks Russ and Tbird I'll do some research,

Tks Mike, I have a red 67 Series I FHC. I got that picture of the E in a hangar or factory off the internet.

I have a feeling that what you describe Jim is what I have.
Thanks gents
Have a good weekend.

Here is a picture of the timing marks. Notice that the cam gear dimple lines up to the line straight up from the RIGHT side of the keyway. Some books have incorrectly shown it to line up with the left side of the keyway. The left side would set the valves one tooth late.

I would remove the 4 spark plugs and hold the timing pin against the cam gear while you slowly hand crank the engine. When the timing pin drops into the dimple, the piston should just reach top dead center.
