Passenger side Tail-lite on '28 Phaeton As I grow older, and immortality is fading away, I am becoming a bit more safety conscious. Hence, I am now beginning to look into adding a second tail lite (passenger side) to my '28 Phaeton. Because it has a large trunk mounted where the rear spare normally would sit, the existing single tail lite is often times not visible.
So I am soliciting information from those of you who HAVE actually mounted a second tail lite to the body of a '28 Tudor or Phaeton (these are different brackets from the '28 coupe / roadster). In particular, the fit of the new cast-iron brackets, to the body. The bracket that I have does not fit the body as well as I believe it should. Is there some grinding / filing that needs to be done to get a proper fit to the body ? What have others done to fit this bracket to the car's body, lower belt ? I would be grateful for any help with this question. |
Re: Passenger side Tail-lite on '28 Phaeton Ther was one on a customers car that looked very nice. It was a year ago and I forget the details, but the original on the left has captive nuts I believe, the added one had long bolts and nuts on the back side. You have to drill through two sections of the rear rail I believe. I'd drill one, fit the bracket and check the alignment, before drilling the other two. Bob

Re: Passenger side Tail-lite on '28 Phaeton Think about "nutserts"............

Re: Passenger side Tail-lite on '28 Phaeton Thanks guys. I am aware of the mounting fasteners; however, it is the actual metal to metal fit of bracket base to body surface, that I am actually concerned with. That is where my bracket does not fit closely and firmly to the body. Are there two (or three) different makers of these brackets ? Or is there only one source, and the bracket mounting base must be custom shaped to closely fit the body contour ?

Re: Passenger side Tail-lite on '28 Phaeton Try to source one from Australia/ NZ .
It will fit perfectly on the right side. I drilled my USA left one right through, as I was not sure I would trust the nutserts in an 86 year old single layer of sheetmetal . Car is a driver, so nuts showing inside was not an issue. |
