Removing Door Handle

I'm trying to remove the door handle off my '30 pickup. It's the locking outside handle. Everything else is off, including all the screws and the inside handle. The latch mech on the edge of the door is unscrewed. The book says to turn the handle 1/4 turn to the left and pull out. Nothing works. Any suggestions?

Ditto. Only remove the two screws holding the handle on. The rest of the latch needs to be tight or it could cause the handle to bind as you attempt to turn and remove. Don't pry on it with anything. Turn and pull.

Pushing the flap in will relieve a bit of pressure, and I also try to spray some penetrating oil on the shaft, then wiggle it as I pull. As Vince said, it's 1/8 turn, not 1/4 turn.

Thanks for the info. I'll let you know how it goes. "The Book" is Les Andrews Model A Ford Mechanics Handbook (the red one) page 1-108

I think most of the guys know it's 1/8 turn, but just mistakenly call it 1/4 turn.

Unfortunately, it's still no go. I've screwed the locking mech back on and doused it with Croil. There's no hint of that thing moving out. I've put the door on the floor, stood on the edge of it and pulled with all my might in numerous positions. All I've managed so far is a sore back.

Here's a link to 4 pictures I posted earlier, that might help.

Looking forward to it 28ACoupe. I've tried all positions... 1/8 turn, 1/4 turn, 1/2 turn, full turn, no turn, all turns in between. Looking forward to posting what the problem was; probably user error.

Re: Removing Door Handle

Are you turning it the Right way or the Left way?

Sometimes that area gets rusted and may be the case without looking at it.

Good luck.

Re: Removing Door Handle

We managed to get the door handles out of the truck today. It took a good deal more work than it should have due to the preponderance of rust. Basically, the knob-rod was rust-welded into the actuator piece and needed some convincing to get it out.

It was rusted stuck tight; had to be driven out. Hard blows with a punch.
