6 volt alternator.

Anyone know if there is a complete kit to purchase for changing over to 6 volt alternator and removing generator? And who might vendor be. Thanks

Re: 6 volt alternator.

Probably not. On my 37 engine I had to replace the intake manifold with a later model to use a GM cheap alternator. There are those out there replacing the guts of your generator with an alternator although be prepared to pay $600+ for that service.

Ed Whitney can convert your 6v Ford generator to an alternator: (714) 773-1611.

Check with Summit. They have "Powermaster" 6V alternators listed. A little expensive, however.

Fith Ave in kansas has a 6 volt setup.

Re: 6 volt alternator.

Try these guys. They list 6 volt alternators and brackets as well as the more pricey Powergen units. I got the 12 volt single wire alternator and bracket for the 8ba in my 40 from them. Good price and it works like a dream.

Re: 6 volt alternator.

I had a 6 volt alternator made from a aguy in Some magagzine. He used the front of a 48 FORD Gen and adapted a 12 volt alternator 1 wire and convered to 6 volt. Works super and you use same bracket and fan belt.

Re: 6 volt alternator.

No matter where you get the alternator, you'll have to make some wiring changes on your own.

Re: 6 volt alternator.

Be sure the ALT unit or kit has an internal voltage regulator. Remove and by-pass your original Voltage Regulator box. Don't short-change your system - use 8 guage wire for supply. One-wire type/arrangement may be easier to hook up but three-wire type better for sensing system voltage use/drop. Use a voltage guage instead of amp guage. Dan

Certified Auto Electric and EJ Whitney are the two worth researching.

YES you have to reverse the polarity of the diodes by the way they are mounted. Easier to buy reverse polarity diodes or replace the entire bridge rectifier which is the complete diode assembly. it's easy to convert a GM 12 to 6 volt POS ground, it takes all stock parts. If making a 6 volt alternator from a GM alternator you should also use a 24 volt stator so it charges at idle speeds with a stock old Ford pulley. I made 7 alternators for my own use using Nippendso small 12 volt alternators inside the 39 Ford generator shells. I mounted the rectifiers and adjustable voltage regulator on the inside of the rear brush holder cap as a plug in assembly. I made 2 extra cap assemblies for spares if I ever had a problem but never needed them after 10,000 miles. I even made an alternator/generator test machine to run load tests on them. I can't locate the pictures right now but will take some more and open a new topic later. G.M.
