31 roadster gas tank

:) I plan on installing my gas tank soon , the plan is to have it boiled out by a radiator shop then use the gas tank restorer which Kanter sells to seal the tank. yes the tank is out of the car. has anyone used this product before?? if so do you have any helpful hints to pass along?? thanks THE HOOCH

Not sure THAT is the product you want to use. The MSDS lists it as Permatex Gasket Sealer. There has been countless failures with it using fuel available here in the States.

If you can find someone to boil it out and it is clean I don't know the purpose of the sealant. If it doesn't leak I would leave it like Henry let it leave the assembly line.

I thought the tanks were tern coated inside?

Re: 31 roadster gas tank

Here is yet another misconception. The Terne finish that was the protective coating was a non-durable coating that deteriorates over the years. THAT in a nutshell is why many tanks have rust inside. Over time and after the Terne coating has rubbed off and it exposes the bare metal underneath. Fuel has oxygenizers in it, plus areas exposed to oxygen will flash rush in the matter of hours. As the fuel splashes by when the vehicle is driven, it dislodges the rust particles and puts them in suspension of the fuel. When the rust is removed from the bare metal, the rusting process cycles all over again. Unless the oxygen is sealed from the metal, it will continue to rust creating more debris in the gas tank.

Interesting thought...while working on getting the rust out of the tank on the 29, I looked inside the tank of my 49 8-N tractor parked next to it.
The inside of the tank was SHINY! It sits a lot more then the 29. I wonder what is inside the 8-N tank to keep it from rusting like the "A" tank does?

Good to know.

Sphooch...did you have any trouble removing the fuel tank from your '31 Roadster?

No experience yet with Model As. A lot of experience w/ motorcycle tanks. I use the POR 15 cleaner and metal etch with w/ a wod of sheet rock screws. I DO NOT USE THE POR15 final slushing compound. I use and am very very satisfied with the Caswell product final tank interior product. Good stuff.

My 2 cents, Gary

use 2 oz of mavel mystery oil to every gallon of gas you put in tank, its not only good for the intake valves and upper cylinders it will also leave a real thin coating of mmo on the inside of fuel tank to help prevent rust formation
