filter in sediment bulb
 

looking for some feed back on putting the paper fuel filter in the glass sediment bulb with a spring underneath. i dont have any trouble now just not looking to create trouble.

Those things are probably the most seductive modification out there. Here's a picture of most of the filters I have tried over the years. Everyone but the pink fiberglass one was trouble, and it's no longer available; it's same-model-number replacement is paper and of very shoddy construction.

My understanding is that most filters are designed to work with a fuel pump. I have seen a lot of other folks have their problems solved by REMOVING a fuel filter, while many others on this board report no problems. The clear plastic inline filter filled up with vapor as I watched and shut down the motor--never really made it out of the driveway. That slick little micro filter held up with the spring is the most seductive and troublesome--you may get a few miles on it. My guess is that filters work ok for folks whose system is so clean that they don't need them. Also, I believe that some of their problems are related to the nefarious vapor pressure issue, as they provide a potential locus for bubble formation and blockage.

My advice: Don't do it! (Results may vary.)

I have run the wix filter with no problems what so ever. In fact just put a new one in yesterday. There was just a bit of very fine crud in the bottom of the glass. That plastic with the spring did the same for me. Got about 5 miles and it collapsed.

Any one ever try an aftermarket Harley fuel line filter?
Designed for a gravity feed system they would probably work fine.

My 30 A had a paper filter in the sediment bowl and a metal inline filter when I got it. The glass bowl always looked great but I had vapor lock/poor fuel flow problems especially when it was hot weather. Took the metal inline filter out and things improved but were still not right. Finally took the paper filter out to check it and found it totally full of swamp debris INSIDE the filter. Checking the sediment bowl out I found that the fuel comes from the tank to the inside of the paper filter, then clean fuel in the visible part of the bowl goes up and out to the carb. Moral of the story is that it's worth your time to check how the sediment bowl works if you're going to use a filter. If you elect to not use a filter it doesn't make any difference. I no longer go by how the bowl looks and check it on a schedule. Am using Napa 3039 filter with spring under it and have had no further fuel problems

Why not just a can/paper fuel filter down stream of the settling bowl screen. More than good enough.
A good stock bowl screen already is OK enough me thinks.
Mine works great.

So what is a gas tank? It just holds what you put in it till you pour it out. This kind of a problem [silt] is not at the filter but in the tank.

I use a micro filter -but i also have a very clean fuel tank.I have had no problems for years. RAY

For those of you that use the WIX filter or Nappa 3034- does it fit in standard glass sediment bowl/changed to larger sediment bowl or have you added it as an additional inline filter
