Engine oil level question I changed the oil on a 29 Tudor.
Les Andrews Handbook states that it will take 4-1/2 quarts when changing the oil. I put in a little over 4 quarts and the dip stick shows about 3/16" over the full mark. Question is: Do I add another 1/2 quart and remark the dip stick? OR what? |
Re: Engine oil level question Could possibly have some sludge build up in there hence the reason at 4 quarts your already over the mark I did my oil change last week at 4.5q I was right on the full line.

I usually put in 4 qts on a oil change. |

I never thought about sludge potentially taking up space in the oil pan and altering the amount of oil required for a refill. My car’s engine was rebuilt before I purchased it; so, I’ve never had the pan off. Can sludge really build up that much? Sent from my iPhone using Tapatalk |

After a 50 year nap, my A had inches of sludge built up in the bottom of the pan, had buildup in the Valve Galley, and had actually blocked the oil pump and oil pump screen. Luckily I caught it before it caused damage to the motor. It is the nastiest black/brown goo like molasses substance ever. Once on your hands or clothes is very difficult to clean off. Since multi-weight oil keeps contamination floating around in the oil, this is the reason some like to add the aftermarket oil filter kit. Other contributors to sludge. In the history of oil, manufacturers added Paraffin to motor oil to quiet valves and worn motors. Paraffin is wax. I believe this was in the 50s/60s Motor coolant temps need to reach 160 degrees or more to allow the oil to reach temps that burn off condensation and other contaminants. Usually for more than 20 minutes. Some of us like to install a thermostat for this reason, and lubrication works better at higher temps, and the thermostat allows the temp to reach operating much quicker. Most wear happens at cold/lower motor temps. Since your motor was rebuilt, your motor should be clean, especially since after rebuild it most likely has been using detergent oil. |

Re: Engine oil level question You are going to have at least 1/2 quart (1 pint) left in the engine after changing the oil.
The engine capacity is 5 quarts. So on refilling, put in 4-1/2 quarts. That will get you to your 5 quart capacity. I hate "guessing" at just how much is in the engine when I check it so I have marked my dipstick. For every quart added, there is a mark. Some may not recommend this and that is OK...It works for me. Just remember when you do this, that there is a 1/2 quart of oil in the engine already that must be accounted for. Pluck |

Re: Engine oil level question Oil capacity is five quarts, tray hold 1/2 quart, 4.5 quarts at oil change,
If you have no sludge in the pan. At your next oil change run your pinky finger in the drain hole and "finger out" how much sludge is in there. |
