Ring and Pinion Removal

1 Attachment(s)
Hey guys,
Any alternate methods to getting the pinion off? I'm replacing both ring and pinion and can't get it off! The whole drive shaft keeps spinning when I try removing the but with a pipe wrench!

From what I've read you can try pulling the whole deal off or you can unbolt the two nuts on the shart over the pinion. I don't have wrenches that big (2+") so I'm really struggling, although I do have a 2/3 pronged puller.

I'm planning on going to find wrenches I'm the morning but thought I'd check for more ideas from you fine folks.

Thanks!

Joe

I made my own wrenches from some 3/8" plate steel, but the Model A parts houses sell them. I've seen a hammer and chisel used a few times, but hate to see stuff like that done.

slow down and get the correct wrenches from the suppliers.
It made it 80 yrs so far without being chewed up.....
pipe wrenches are for plumbing....

According to the Parts Price List, the nut is 2 1/8".

I cut the steel plate with a plasma cutter at a high school shop, then used a sanding belt, disc sander, files, and grinders to finish the wrenches.

I used one purchased special wrench and one large cresent wrench from harbor freight.

You will want to read this article by Tom Endy regarding the correct way to disassemble a rear axle.

You will need some basic and a few specialized tools to complete the job, paying particular attention to the bearing pre-load adjustments attained by using the thin banjo gaskets mentioned in the article.

Many differentials have been ruined by people with insufficient knowledge and the improper use of tools. Good Luck !

Thanks for the advice guys. In addition to your suggestions, I've been talking with the local Model A shop (A's and More) and he's helping me through it.

I couldn't get it off this weekend...Eric should be able to help me out of this bind...literally!
